Does working an 8 hour day at a white-collar job include a lunch hour?

Just got my first real job out of college. I'm suppose to work 8 hours a day. That means 9 hours, including lunch, right? I'm confused by the cliche ';a 9-to-5 job'; because that seems to imply that lunch is included in the 8 hours. Is it?
